What is the difference between front-end and back-end development?

If you are new to or just learning web development, you will hear the phrase “front-end development” a lot. As a beginner in the field, it can be a little confusing, so let’s demystify and explain what it covers, and most importantly what it does not.

Before, when you visit a website or web application, what you saw in your browser, was the output of a single application. The application would fetch information from a database and then display it in your browser. Things have changed a lot since then.

Now, with the exception of static single page website, almost every web application you come across will now consist of a front-end, which is what you see in the browser, and the back-end, which is where most of the programming and logic resides.

Aside from the fact that this is a much better method of engineering web applications, the main reason we arrived at this design paradigm is for ease of development. It’s not unusual to have hundreds or even thousands of engineers work on a single app at the same time. Now teams of developers can work on the front end, independently of back-end development.

Even with a lot of the work done by the back end, front-end development is still critical to an application working the way it should. Which is why front-end developers with experience in JavaScript and its many libraries and development frameworks are in great demand.

No matter which option you choose, be sure to find a reliable web host that can make sure you have as much uptime as you need to make an impression on all potential customers. If you’re looking for a Los Angeles web hosting provider, be sure to visit Electric Kitten, a trusted web hosting company that has served Southern California for almost two decades.
