Oracle, the other cloud-based computing giant

Posted on May 4, 2012

Do you remember the time when you have to very expensive software to run your company IT department? Those days are fading away soon and cloud-based computing is taking a foothold in the industry. SAP and Salesforce.com are dominating the field and Oracle making an entry.

Oracle, according to others is out of touch. Others also say that Oracle still in high-end computer hardware due to its 2010 acquisition of Sun Microsystems.

However, Oracle goes beyond cloud computing which is called “software as a service (SaaS)” and “cloud-based software” to “delivering software over the internet”.

Oracle has 380,000 worldwide customers. Oracle provides private clouds, on-premises clouds, public clouds, or combination of all three. Oracle is adding cloud-based computing to its offering through acquisitions like RightNow Technologies and custom software development by the company.

Industry experts estimate that the software business worldwide is $150 billion a year and 10 percent of that is generated by SaaS. Given the industry trend, this could climb to much higher levels within next few years. Oracle generates about $1 billion in revenue from cloud-based computing. It is the second largest provider in terms of revenue generation from cloud-based computing behind Salesforce.com which generates about $3 billion in sales revenue.
